Llamas were the primary means of transportation before the arrival of the Spanish.
The Inca road, or Qapac Ñan, covered up to 60,000 kilometers across Peru, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and Colombia.
All the roads originated in the city of Cusco. For the Incas, this city was considered the political, religious, and administrative center of Tawantinsuyu, which covered a little over 3,000 square kilometers and encompassed the aforementioned countries.
To manage and distribute resources, llamas were used as pack animals.
As the Spanish established themselves in Peru, llamas were gradually replaced by horses, mules, and donkeys.
And llamas and alpacas were relegated to the high Andes Mountains. Currently, llamas and alpacas can still be found in some parts of Peru. Thanks to the alpaca fiber boom, local herders and communities continue to raise alpacas for their fiber and meat, and they also raise llamas within the alpaca herds.
Llamas are still used as pack animals in some areas where horses, donkeys, and mules cannot acclimatize to the altitude.
With the tourism boom in Peru, llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, and guanacos are the stars of the country's wildlife tourism.
Many of our clients are very happy after trekking with llamas and alpacas in the Andes. Experience our llama trek with Pablo Tour amidst the Andean wilderness and witness how the Incas were able to conquer these lands with the help of these South American camelids, which provided companionship, food, clothing, and, in the case of the llama, a pack animal.
